Thailand and the Sinsord
I am married and have a little girl with a Thai Woman. First time I
went there I fell in love with the country. It has a lot to offer, I
try get there every year and each year it still surprises me. It often
gets known for the wrong reasons. There is great poverty there, unlike
in the western world there is no social welfare, often elderly
childless people have to work until the end of there days. Normally
children take care of there elder parents. Thailand has a culture that
adapts for the lack of welfare. Children when they begin to work take
care of their parents. Money is sent home, similar to The Irish, when
there was mass emigration to the UK and the USA. Also similar to the
Irish in the last century Thailand has a culture where anyone marrying
the Daughter's of the family pay a sinsord to compensate the family for
the loss of a worker and maybe an income, also to compensate the
parents for any loss. In richer society in Thailand this sometimes is
waved, but in rural Thailand it's still a strong culture. This culture
was also in Europe up to the second half of the last century. Only then
the women had to pay the mans family. It's got confused in western
culture as buying a bride. But it applies to all men Thai or western.
Its actually usually not a lot of money, but some families when a
westerner is involved can up the steaks, sometimes it leads to an end to
the relationship. Sometimes even Thai men who can not come up with the
sinsod are not allowed by the parents to marry too. While Thailand has
poverty this tradition will stay.
